Chocolate Canine Chews

October 22, 2009

For Shannon’s contest to benefit the Humane Society of Alachua County, I wanted to submit the following recipe for dogs!  I don’t know where on earth it came from, but my mom has been making it for years.  Dogs go absolutely nuts for these, plus they are all natural.  They do have a little bit of chocolate in them, and while many people will claim chocolate is bad for dogs, the small amount in here is absolutely harmless, considering the amount of treats it makes!

Chocolate Canine chews

  • 3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 1/2 cups oatmeal
  • 3 tbsp. margarine or butter
  • 2 squares (1 oz. each) unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 cups water or milk
  • 3 tbsp. brown sugar

-Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.
-Mix flour and oatmeal together.
-Heat water/milk, butter/margarine, chocolate and sugar over low heat, stirring occasionally, until chocolate melts.  Pour into flour mixture and stir until mixed, adding more oatmeal as necessary.  Dough should be stiff.
-Pat dough into 1/4 – 1/2” thickness on a lightly floured cookie sheet.  Cut with doggie biscuit cutter (I use all different size bone shapes!) or into little nugget sized pieces.  Continue doing this, using scraps to create new biscuits.
-Bake for 1 hour or until brown and crisp.  Cool and wire rack.

This usually makes about 300 little gumball sized nuggets, which Rufio likes to share with all of his doggie friends!

This recipe has been Rufio approved:

I don’t really know, but I talked to my vet, and she said a teeny tiny, minimal amount of dark chocolate won’t cause a problem. Emma is awful, so obvious!
