Stay Warm This Winter!

January 19, 2010

First of all, who’s been watching 24?  I think it’s my favorite show ever (even more than How I Met Your Mother and Friends!).  Loving it so far!

My mom is one of the most ridiculously talented people I have ever met.  She can cook and bake like a champ, and is very crafty.  She is by far the best knitter and needlepointer I know (and I’m not just saying that b/c she’s my mom!).  For example, this pillow, which is always hanging out in the back of blog pictures (most with Rufio!) was made by my mom.

I could probably go through my apartment and snap tons of pictures of the various afghans, sweaters, hats, scarves, etc. that my mom has made.  However, there is one knit good that’s the point of this post…GLITTENS!

It’s hella cold where I live, and I always end up living in cold places.  While I love gloves, mostly because I think it’s easier to do everyday things with gloves, I also love mittens because they keep me super warm.  I’ve seen a few different glove/mitten combos in stores, but none that I loved (gah, I’m picky!).  Leave it to my mom to figure out how to make these herself.

My glittens!  Well, one of many pairs.  I keep one in my car, just in case, and have a few more in pockets of various coats.  They always keep me so warm, plus I love having my fingers free in case I need to pick things up, or grab something from my wallet or anything at all!

Plus, having a mitten cuff helps keep me so warm!

They also have a nice long cuff, so my wrist never gets cold 🙂

Well, Mama J decided that since it’s been such a cold winter everywhere, she wanted to give a pair to one of my readers, because she wants you all to stay warm too!  The winner will receive a lavender pair of glittens, courtesy of my mom (who really needs her own website or Etsy page…hint hint mom!)

Because I really haven’t been doing anything with Twitter lately, there’s going to be 4 ways to enter:

  1. Leave a comment telling me what you’re doing to cope with the cold!
  2. Link back to this on your blog and leave me a comment telling me you did.
  3. Add me to your blogroll and leave me a comment telling me you did.
  4. Subscribe to my blog and leave me a comment that you did!

That’s it!  I will pick a winner on Saturday, and Mama J will send you your glittens!

First of all HOW SWEET of your mom! You are so lucky to have her!
And to keep warm I have been staying in a lot and working out at home so I don’t have to survive the cold getting there and getting home. AND sad to say I have been snuggling up with a cuppa Teavana and my Snuggie and watching TV with my puppy!

Cold weather gear is how I stay warm. I FINALLY realized after 10 years of living in Chicago that it’s worth it to pay more for the good stuff, and that even if it’s not as cute – it will keep your warm!

It is warmer outside often than in my house…old school island living means no heat in the house. I have a tiny heater I roll room to room.

All I have to say is Mama J’s knitting is one of a kind. She is talented, sweet, kind-hearted, and you feel the love that goes into every stitch. I am lucky to have a pair of glittens and whoever wins these is EXTREMELY lucky. Good luck!

Those look great! I’m a crochet girl and keep meaning to tackle fingerless gloves but for some reason they intimidate me.
Does flying south count as a way to deal with the cold? I’m on vacation and everyone down here is saying it’s cold and I’m saying how wonderful it is! At home though, it’s all about keeping my core warm – I usually wear a tank top underneath my clothes to make sure my core stays warm, and if I start to get cold in my house, then it’s time to get up and play with the dogs, clean, cook something, or just run around for a bit – anything to get the blood moving.

Those are adorable. I love them. If only it were cold here. I live in a desert and the high today is going to be 76º. Are you kidding me? I miss the cold. Love the glittens though. Wish I could use them.

I deal with the cold by always keeping a fleece jacket nearby.

Glittens! I love it! Keeping a pair in the car is SUCH a good idea! I will jump in the freezing cold car to run somewhere really quick, glove-less, and my hands can barely touch the icy steering wheel…makes driving quite difficult! lol However, these are too cute to be “car gloves”.

I have been coping with the cold by…well, pushing through it! haha Less time outside, unfortunately. Although, I have to go to class so it’s inevitable that I will encounter the cold more often than not!

I’ve been looking for a new pair of these mittens too this year and couldn’t find ones I like. My pair from last year has holes in the thumbs, so I could really use a new pair. To stay warm I mostly curl up under blankets!!
