Dessert in a Glass

December 27, 2010

Sometimes it snows a lot.  You get snowed in.  Which means a lot of eating, game playing and drinking.  Sometimes the snow is close to 30″ and you aren’t getting out of NJ, because it’s in a state of emergency.  For real.  Check it out.

Rufio certainly LOVES the snow.  A lot.

So when you’re stuck inside you get creative.  Sometimes, you aren’t quite sure if you want dessert or a cocktail.  So sometimes, you just do a two in one and have a delicious, decadent dessert in alcoholic form.  Because we’re adults so we can.  Oh, and just FYI, though I am exclusively nursing Aaron, it is totally OK to indulge in an occasional adult beverage.  I’ve done my research, I promise!

Unsure of what to drink, I realized I was craving something I hadn’t had in well over 8 years.  When I spent a semester in Melbourne, Australia in the spring of 2002, we spent a lot of time at the Crowne Casino, gambling, dining, shopping and just having a lot of fun.  One of our absolute favorite places was called Cafe Greco (I don’t know how I remember that)!  They had beautiful, delicious desserts and we all loved to treat ourselves.  In addition to amazing desserts, they also served one of the best drinks I’ve ever had in my life…A “Toby” which is short for Toblerone, the candy bar.

Usually now, I stick with wine or beer.  Aside from the fact that I avoid creamy drinks for health reasons, they are just too heavy for me.  The only time you’ll ever see me have a creamy drink  is on vacation, never with dinner, and never at a party.  However, being snowed in does call for some exceptions.  So we had Tobys.  They werre awesome, and took me right back to my time in Australia.

Here’s what you need to make 2 Tobys:

  • 2 oz. Frangelico
  • 1 oz. Bailey’s Irish Cream
  • 1 oz. Kahlua
  • 5 oz. cream (I used skim milk)
  • LOTS of ice
  • chocolate syrup or honey
  • cocoa powder or chocolate shavings

Combine the alcohols, milk or cream and ice in a blender (or your mom’s VitaMix!) and blend until smooth.

Pour into a glass lined with honey or chocolate syrup.

Garnish with cocoa or chocolate shavings.

This drinks always makes me wonder…if I could only have one for the rest of my life, which would I pick…dessert or alcohol?  I want to say alcohol, since I just love wine, but I’m not 100% sure.   Something to ponder!

How about you?  If you could only have one for the rest of your life which would you pick…alcohol or dessert?

Definitely dessert- I’m not a big drink person, I mean I enjoy them but I enjoy dessert more haha.

Also, I totally went to that Casino when I was studying abroad. I was in Sydney but I visited Melbourne for a weekend and somehow ended up there, so random!

Eek, all that snow!!! At least Rufio had some fun in it 🙂 We got snow here but unfortunately I was in FL (I am one of those weirdos who likes snow).

Ok, I’ve pondered this and I am going with alcohol. You can always get a little suckey candy that tastes like dessert plus you can make drinks like the one you made!
